Selecting Fine China For Your Wedding Gift List

By Jessica Murray

Years ago, couples rarely lived together before getting married and each party came to the new marital home straight from their parent's house. The wedding gift list, if there was one, would consist of household items need to set up their new home such as linens, cookware or decorative items. These days, many couples co-habit or have their own apartments prior to marriage and instead of these items, a fine china dinner service makes an excellent gift.

A couple moving in together might find themselves doubling up on all the basic household goods. If each brings kitchen items and linens their home could be fully kitted out but without luxury items which are less affordable. A porcelain dinner service is a beautiful yet practical gift for the couple who has everything. There are any numbers of styles and patterns to choose from to suit all tastes.

A luxurious china set need not be brought out just for dinner parties or special occasions. Manufacturers have many ranges meant for everyday use which are more durable than the very fine porcelains. To get a good quality product, the dinner service my run to hundreds or even thousands of dollars, but such an elegant thing will becomes an heirloom to be passed on to future generations.

If you would like to receive a wonderful dinner set there are some things to think about before selecting a product. If you want to use the service everyday then make sure it is dishwasher safe and durable enough to withstand daily usage. Gold and silver look beautiful and elegant, but they will not survive the rigors of heavy use for very long.

If you want the service to become a family heirloom it is worth choosing a manufacturer who has a long history of production. In the future when breakages occur you do not want to find the company has gone out of business and replacements cannot be found. Also enquire whether the pattern you like is going to be a long run or just a one off as again replacements will be hard to source later.

When you have picked the style and selected the items you would like, you need to let your friends and family know. While simply hinting at your choice might get you a few items, a far better way is to make a list of all the individual pieces. With a list you are more likely to get a full service rather than twenty soup plates and no serving dishes.

Many retailers and manufacturers have websites where wish lists can be set up online. A wedding registry is an excellent way for people to check what you want and order it. This method is perfect when friends and relations are scattered across the globe and may not have access to the same stores as you.

Some people may not have access to purchase online or view your list. If your family is nearby and the store local, another way to create a list is to print pictures and create a physical list for people to choose from. Using a notebook where pages can be removed for each item will avoid duplicates and you should end up with a fantastic heirloom.
